SVB + Weebly Happy Hour benefitting Hack the Hood
Monday, September 8th after Techcrunch Disrupt
5 PM - 9 PM
Pete's Tavern (two blocks from TC Disrupt on Pier 48)
128 King Street, San Francisco
The TECH Foundation partnered with Silicon Valley Bank and Weebly after TechCrunch Disrupt for a happy hour benefitting local non-profit Hack the Hood, which provides high-tech skills and mentoring to low-income youth.
The cost of admission was donated to Hack the Hood's general costs, which include technical equipment, food, bus passes, and a small stipend for the youth participating in the program. Additional donations were also collected for Hack the Hood's Chromebooks fund ($179 each) for Hack the Hood's next youth program. We raised enough for almost 9 Chromebooks at this event alone!
About Hack the Hood:
Hack the Hood is both a youth development program AND economic development program. We train low-income youth of color in 21st century career skills and online technology, which they then apply to real-world consulting projects for small minority-owned businesses in their neighborhoods. Youth build new mobile-responsive, SEO optimized websites; list clients on online maps and directories, and get them started on social media.

Soccer Tournament and Field Day benefitting Room to Read
Fort Scott, Presidio, San Francisco
The T.E.C.H. Foundation hosted a Soccer Tournament and Field Day on August 16th from 9am - 4pm at Fort Scott. A great group of Bay Area Startup employees, including those from Dropbox, Weebly, Tilt, WeHeartIt, TradeShift, Silicon Valley Bank, and many others, came out to play soccer, play a variety of park games, and enjoy a summer day in San Francisco's Presidio! SF SPCA Yappy Hour
Bloodhound, 1145 Folsom Street, San Francisco
The T.E.C.H. Foundation hosted a dog-friendly "Yappy Hour" at 7pm on Wednesday, July 16th at Bloodhound benefiting the SF SPCA. Attendees were able to choose between donating to the Adoptions Center or the Spay and Neuter Clinic. It was a fun event in a great bar, and we were surrounded by about a dozen pooches! The T.E.C.H. Foundation also provided both human and canine attendees with a homemade cookie.
As the fourth oldest humane society in the U.S. and the founders of the No-Kill movement, the SF SPCA has always been at the forefront of animal welfare. As a result of our efforts and those of our community partners, San Francisco has the lowest euthanasia rate of any major city in the United States. No adoptable dog or cat in San Francisco goes without a home, even if they have medical or other issues.

Happy Hour co-hosted by Silicon Valley Bank featuring Build
Jones, San Francisco
For our fourth event, we were thrilled to partner with Silicon Valley Bank for a special happy hour featuring the local non-profit BUILD. Ticket prices included a drink and appetizers, generously provided by Silicon Valley Bank. With its beautiful outdoor patio set against the dramatic backdrop of downtown San Francisco, Jones was the perfect location to welcome Spring to our city. We had a great turnout and loved working with all of our partners, SVB, BUILD, and Jones.
About BUILD: BUILD's mission is to use entrepreneurship to excite and propel disengaged, low-income students through high school to college success. BUILD serves students that are at highest risk for dropping out of school. By helping disadvantaged students start up and run their own small businesses, BUILD supplements traditional school with real-world professional experiences, academic support, and 21st century skill-building. Entrepreneurship is the hook - but college is the goal. All of BUILD's business and academic activities foster student proficiency in 21st century skills that research shows prepares students for college and the workforce.

Dinner Party and Fundraiser featuring SF-Marin Food Bank
For our third event, the T.E.C.H. Foundation had a great time putting on an intimate 10 Course Dinner for 16 with burgeoning chefs Stephanie Hua and Michael Seibel benefiting the SF-Marin Food Bank, which was hosted by Brooke and David Rusenko. Chef Seibel generously donated all costs of food as well as some wine from his personal collection, and T.E.C.H. founders Brooke and Maggie donated wine as well. Because of this, nearly 100% of the ticket price went directly to the SF-Marin Food Bank.
About the SF-Marin Food-Bank: The Food Bank's mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin, where 1 out of 4 residents are in need of food assistance. This year, the Food Bank will distribute 46 million pounds of food to the community, half of which is fresh produce. This is enough food for more than 105,000 meals each day. Seventy percent is distributed through a network of 240 weekly farmers' market-style pantries that help individuals, seniors, and families stretch their food budget. Food is also distributed through additional programs such as senior centers, soup kitchens, and youth programs.

Beer Tasting & Fundraiser featuring Family House at the Beer Hall
1 Polk Street, San Francisco, CA 94102
For our second event, the T.E.C.H. Foundation had a great time partnering with the local non-profit Family House for a beer tasting at the Beer Hall. The Beer Hall staff could not have been more accommodating to our group. We had a great turn out and it was so nice to support such a great local charity.
About Family House: Family House serves as a home away from home for families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses by providing physical comfort and emotional support, free from financial concerns. Family House was founded in 1981 and began providing temporary housing to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital. Over the course of a year Family House serves over 2,000 families.
Family House will use the funds raised at this event for their Family Support Program. Because all families come to Family House from at least 50 miles outside of San Francisco, and often from much further, living away from home for weeks or months often necessitates additional assistance. To help ease the burden of living remotely while caring for a sick child, in addition to housing, Family House helps families with basic needs and supplies, providing kitchen staples for the community pantry, as well as grocery cards, gas cards, and phone cards. In addition, when necessary and possible, Family House assists families with larger and more difficult expenses, such as funeral costs. Because the majority of our families are low income, the expenses related to funerals and memorial services can often be well beyond their financial reach. During this particularly painful time, Family House makes every attempt to assist families with the costs.

Launch & Fundraiser for Watsi at Press Club
20 Yerba Buena Lane, San Francisco, CA 94103
We were thrilled to celebrate the launch of the T.E.C.H. Foundation and to announce that we raised over $2,000 for our first featured non-profit: Watsi.
About Watsi: Watsi is a global crowdfunding platform that enables anyone to directly fund low-cost, high-impact medical care for people in need. Since launching a year ago on a bootstrapped budget of $3,000, Watsi has funded medical care for more than 1,000 patients in 16 countries. Watsi was the first non-profit to participate in Y Combinator and was recently featured in the New York Times.
Watsi will use the funds to scale their operations, enabling them to provide medical care to more people around the world. At the event itself, attendees also had the opportunity to donate to specific patients in need of medical treatment.
Chase Adam, Co-Founder of Watsi, also attended this event and answered questions about the organization. Chase participated in Y Combinator's Winter 2013 class and was recently named one of Forbes 30 Under 30 for the Social Entrepreneurs category.
